Exclude members of a device group from software distribution using a Query

I need to send out software to all computers in the organization, with the exception of a group of about 100.  I would like to keep these computer names in a device group, and have a query designed to select all computers but these.  I've been building queries for a while now with no problem, but I cannot figure out how to do this.  It certainly would be easier than having to pick those 100 or so names out of the total list of computers that need to be in a scheduled task.

MSI Error 1603 "A fatal error occurred during installation" (ISMsiServerStartup)

Dear all

We are trying to install a 3rd party MSI but getting the dreaded 1603 MSI error.  We have tried allsorts inc. elevating NTFS/registry/DCOM permissions to no avail and we have checked we can install other MSIs fine with out current version of InstallShield (11.5).  I have attached the verbose MSI logfile in the hope someone can read and understand it and shine some light on our predicament. I have copied an extract from the logfile below for quick reference to the seemingly problematic area:-

------------------
MSI (s) (68!70) [11:46:40:300]: Creating MSIHANDLE (236) of type 790531 for thread 2160
1: Failed to extract IGdi.dll, Ignore it.
MSI (s) (68!70) [11:46:40:300]: Closing MSIHANDLE (236) of type 790531 for thread 2160

MSI (s) (68:58) [11:46:40:316]: Doing action: ISCleanUpFatalExit
Action ended 11:46:40: ISMsiServerStartup. Return value 1603.

------------------

I have looked in the InstallShield/Acresso Forums and scoured the web generally and found loads of people suffering the same fate.  What appears to be consistent is that:-

- Launch MSI as local system when an admin is logged in: works
- Launch MSI as local system when nobody is logged in: works

- Launch MSI as local system when a non-admin local user is logged in: works.

- Launch MSI as local system when a non-admin domain user is logged in: doesn't work (our environment).

We can force the installation to be successful by adding the logged on domain user to a "Desktop Admins" group which effectively elevates their permissions to 'administrator'.  However, this really is our last resort and least preferred solution because it's against IT Policy to any user to install unauthorised apps.  Attached the logfile from a successful installation so comparisons can be made between a failed and successful installation if helpful when troubleshooting.  I have tried StartAsUser.exe  but the install fails due to lack of admin rights as expected.  There must be a way to get this MSI installed without having to elevate the permissions of the logged-on user.

Any ideas please?

Many thanks

Scott

Role for software deployment only

If I wanted to create a role where a console user could only add and remove machines to an existing task and then be able to deploy that task how would you assign that permission? I don't want them to have any access to Distribution packages, Direcotry Management or Delivery Methods the admins will build all that one the back end. Just need techs to add machines to a task and start the task.

How to handle / restart explorer.exe during software upgrade

Wondering if anyone can help with this.

WinZip has to kill the Explorer Shell (desktop icons, start menu, etc) if it is being installed on a system that already has an earlier version installed due to the hooks it has in the 'right click context menu'.

If I run my WinZip package manually, the Explorer shell is killed and at the end, it is restarted, but if I run is via the LANDesk Portal, it is killed and does not restart.  This is, I am 99% sure, because it is running a local system.

I know that if I bring up the task manager and type in explorer.exe it will restart... but users are not going to know that.

Add a command to to my package to restart explorer.exe does not work either when run via the Portal, again, because it is running as the local system.

Does anyone have a work around?

Portal Manager How to

I am looking to leverage the portal manager in my organization on Landesk 9.5 sp1 to empower users to install approved software packages on their own to reduce demand on the Helpdesk.

The image will help give an understanding.

You can see that I am using the left most menu for applications. I am looking for a better way to organize as ultimately I suspect there will be 10-15 applications here.

Second, I have not been able to determine what the center pane under name, type, description etc. is for.

Can someone give me an example of how this portal could leveraged? I picturing major headings on the left under launch pad like Office Apps, Backup Ups etc that would populate a selection to the center screen for choices. Does this make sense?

Ultimately I am in need of some resources and insight into how to use this part of Landesk and what it can truly do.

Thanks in advance,

James

Caching files before an installation

I am looking for a way to configure up tasks/delivery method/whatever to get package installation a certain way. I am testing v9.5 SP2, but can't find a way to work this.

I want to be able to have a task, that when it kicks off on the client, is initially silent, the files associated with the task are downloaded\cached locally, and only then it automatically prompts the user to run the installation. So, not the pre-caching feature in Delivery Methods which doesn't run the installation, but something like it that then DOES run the installation. All in one step.

I have a user base that travels a LOT. And I don't want to prompt the user to close an application to install the something (say an Adobe Acrobat update)., then have to wait a long time until the package is then downloaded over a slow link before it actually installs. If you have several of these this can make the user wait a long time before the download and install are done before they can use their app again.

Any ideas how this can be done with the newest version?

Thanks!

Cancel job still active

I cancelled a batch task deployment.  But the machines still show as active.  the weird thing is that these machines are not on. And since the task has already been canceled, I cant not cancel it again.  Should I just delete the job or will it still try to run when the machine does come online. If I delete the machines,it comes back.

I am on LDMS9 SP4.

I thought I would share some useful information I found out about distributing software that uses the install shield.  Below are some commands that can be ran against a software package that uses install shield.  The first command creates the iss answer file.  While the second command allows you to install the software using the answer file.  See the link for additional details.

Recording the response file

DSSAC_setup.exe /r /f1c:\temp\DS2.iss

Installing with response file

DSSAC_setup.exe -s -f1.\ds2.iss

The above assumes that DSSAC_Setup.exe is in the same folder as the DS2.ISS

Need help in creating a group(s) or query that will automatically get software install.

For example: if I create a query using OU structure for HR, a new machine get deployed to HR and put into this OU then it will automatically get specific software install.

Is this possible?

Odd behavior when downloading files for job...client thinks itself is a peer?

$

check this out. It's an excerpt from a sdclient log when it was downloading some files for a package. 192.168.253.150 is the client that's doing the downloading. It seems it wastes a few minutes per file, seemingly trying to get the file from itself.

Anyone see this? Is is expected?

This particular client is communicating through the gateway. I can't say I've seen the same logging on directly connected clients.

Receiving error "Sdclient.exe or the installation program was terminated at the client" when trying to deploy executable package

Running LANDesk Management Suite 9 with Service Pack 2. I'm attempting to install an executable package on a Windows 7 machine. When I try, the console shows a status of "Failed" and the error message "Sdclient.exe or the installation program was terminated at the client. Return code 1." I have never encountered this error before, and all of my other software packages have installed successfully in the past. To be sure, I also deployed a test package that ran successfully.

All LANDesk services are running under the local system account. The log file shows that all of the required files were downloaded to the client, and there are no indications of errors. Here is the last block of text from the log:

How to build a Cisco AnyConnect mobility client distribution package with built in profile

Anyone create a a Cisco Anyconnect distribution package when complete has the built in hostname and AD child domain ?

It is pretty straight forward to create a .exe that can be distributed but this lacks hostname to connect to and the AD domain the account uses.

When you create the Cisco Anyconnect .exe using the Web portal a exe file is created but also a Cisco folder is copied to

%LOCALAPPDATA% C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local . This holds information relating to the host to connect to and the AD domain. Is it possible using Landesk to copy a folder in a share to a user environment variable path like %LOCALAPPDAT% ?

16422 Failed to download all additional files for a package

$

I'm a bit of a newbie to LANDesk, and I'm having dificulty with deploying a software package.

I have a distribution package that I have created that when I run the scheduled task to deploy it fails with the following code:

16422 Failed to download all additional files for a package

I am attempting to have the client download using http. I have confirmed that I can enter the location of the files and download at least the msi via browser (in fact, I can browse the files in the structure with no problem. And I have another executable package that I can distribute via http with no issues to the same test machine).

The installation fails pretty quickly, probably within 60 seconds and I cannot find a log file that describes any kind of issue as to why. This software package has a LARGE number of additional files that are needed for the installation (in the order of ~1700 files), I don't know if that plays into it or anything?

Can someone point me to where I can get more information regarding why it's failing and what I can do about it?

Thanks in advance.
