Recently I added a REG QUERY command into my distribution batch files to confirm software installation. The results of all the Windows 2000 machines failed and came back with this message: DNS server not authoritative for zone. Also, all the task log files have this message in it: Setting status for batch file to 9009.
After researching the DNS message above (which sent me on a wild goose chase) I realized that REG.EXE is not built into Windows 2000 like it is with Windows XP and 2003. The DNS message is very misleading, it had nothing to do with DNS, and it was basically a missing file problem.
